COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - An English-born Missouri woman whose uncertain immigration status could mean a permanent return to her birthplace will seek help from politicians and immigration officials in Washington.
Lauren Gray, of Trenton, turns 21 in early August. She has lived in northern Missouri since her British parents arrived on a work visa when she was 4 years old.
President Barack Obama recently announced a new rule that stops deportation proceedings against law-abiding immigrants brought illegally to the United States as children. The "deferred action request" could affect 800,000 immigrants, but the rule won't take effect before Gray's departure deadline expires.
