Jefferson City looks at changing noise ordinance

Jefferson City is preparing to revamp its outdated noise ordinance with more measurable standards.

At the Council Committee on Administration meeting Wednesday, City Counselor Drew Hilpert presented an amended noise ordinance that would be easier for police to enforce.

“It’s so far out of date to be almost inapplicable,” Hilpert said.

I hope it changes and passes. I am so sick of hearing that loud boom boom going down the road from the car next to me.

I'm afraid you'll still have that even with the change to the ordinance.

You should live in Holts Summit. Its terrible. Rude people. Blaring that stuff at the wee hours of the morning. At least you HAVE an ordinance.

good for them. maybe it will soften the appearance of jefferson city as being run down. my biggest pet peeve visiting my wife's family in old town is having to listen to a car stereo you can feel coming from 4 blocks away and hear it from 3. Jefferson city should have no problem enforcing this ordinance and it may bring in some much needed revenue. I just got back from Copenhagen, a city of over a million people and remarked how much more pleasant and quite the streets were there compared to here.

edit: how do I change my user pic? my 13 year old did that for me and he is still in Switzerland at summer camp

Doesn't matter the kind of music. Your right to enjoy your music ends where my hearing begins.

Unfortunately, in most places and I suspect here in Jeff. as well, I believe you will find your statement is true only after 2200 hrs.

I've removed some personal bickering from this page. Please focus on the issues related to the proposed ordinance. Thanks. --Rick Brown, online editor, News Tribune

The noise ordinance is a good thing when they enforce it equally. The county already has one and i have seen young black kids blasting rap music get pulled over left and right and then turn around and see young white kids ride past county police or even behind them blasting country or rock and the police are just bobbing there heads along with the music instead of issuing them a ticket. Therefore there has to be equal enforcement of the law.

A long as it is equally enforced it is a great thing because i too am tired of the loud music going by my house at all hours of the night.

The COUNTY has a noise ordinance that applies to music from vehicles?

This is a horribly-written law. It is too vague and lacking in specifics to be enforcable.

There is no definition or measurement of terms like "excessive", "unneccessary", "raucous", "unusually loud", etc.

Don't we have a decent attorney on staff who understands how to write quantifiable, measurable, enforceable ordinances? This thing is just a total waste of time and tax dollars.

I've seen cities in other states that a law that stops a lot of the noise. "If we can hear your boom box at 50', first time it'll cost you $50-. 2nd time $500-. 3rd time $1,000-, your car, and 90 days in jail". And each time adds 3 points to you lic.
