The new St. Mary's Health Center is one step closer to becoming a reality.

On Wednesday, nearly 300 people gathered as local dignitaries, St. Mary's officials and employees broke ground on the 167-bed facility, while others watched the historic event live on the Internet.

The $200 million complex is scheduled to be open by January 2015.

Started 107 years ago in a small four- or five-room house on Elm Street, St. Mary's new home was touted by Mayor Eric Struemph as being the single largest economic development project in Jefferson City.
