Growing up, Bob Proctor spent several years bouncing between families in the Kansas City area while in foster care.
But despite these early lessons in adversity, he soon discovered that service in the military could provide opportunities once viewed as unattainable.
While attending college, he began to long for the military structure to which he had grown accustomed, and joined the Missouri National Guard in September 1989. Proctor quickly learned about the vagaries of a military commitment.
