Cole County to work on zoning plan

Public forum slated Wednesday

Cole County is set to begin developing a zoning plan and regulations for the unincorporated portions of the county.

A workshop and public forum will be held Wednesday for residents and business representatives to discuss current and future needs of the county. The meeting is scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the training classroom at the Cole County Fire Protection District building, 5206 Monticello Road.

County staff and members of the planning team from White & Smith LLC will explain how a zoning code is developed and gather suggestions on the primary zoning needs for the county.

I'm glad to see Cole County finally going forward with zoning. This will help the area develop in a planned and responsible manner.

I agree Jenni. this is a very politcally difficult decision for the County Commission to make. Many in the county believe ANY restrictions on Property not acceptable. Many of us believe however that this is a very good thing for the county so that orderly development can occur. Kudos to Ellinger, Wrigley and Hoelscher. Now it is up to us to get involved in the plan to make sure it is the best for us.!

Planning and zoning is a touchy subject anywhere you go in Missouri due to the large amount of misinformation put out what those two actually do. In relation to the most of the counties in the state (who don't have planning or zoning), Cole County is definitely heading in the right direction.

Voluntary annexation would be a much better solution.

They need to adopt BOCA building codes county-wide, including Jefferson City.
