Tax ruling not too taxing for JC man

A Jefferson City man faces a 15-day jail sentence and a fine to be set by Cole County Presiding Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce, after a Cole County jury quickly convicted him Tuesday of failing to file a state income tax form for 2007.

Farrel Shay Carpenter, 55, of 3907 State Route CC, represented himself in the one-day trial, arguing he was not a "taxpayer" as defined by federal law and U.S. Supreme Court rulings, so he didn't have to pay state taxes either.
