Forums on proposed library levy increase set

Supporters of a proposed 10-cent property tax increase for Missouri River Regional Library on the Aug. 7 ballot are hosting a series of informational meetings in July.

Tricia Schlechte, board treasurer and chairwoman of the ad hoc committee set up to study the levy issue, said the proposed levy increase would allow the library to continue to offer quality programs and services to residents in Cole and Osage counties.

If the levy issue passes, a person with a home valued at $100,000, would pay about $20 more a year with the 10-cent increase.

Public meetings to discuss the proposed levy increase will be held:

• 7 p.m. July 9 at the American Legion Hall, 204 N. Highway 63, Freeburg.

NO!

Invest in Internet accessibility for people where they live. Brick and mortar libraries are dying relics. Invest in the future, not the past.

There are a lot of uninformed and uneducated opionions about libraries as one can tell from jclifers comment. Libraries are not for everyone at every point in their lives. Neither are hospitals, police stations, fire departments, or schools. However, libraries are there for those who choose to accept the services. An investment in the library IS an investment in the future not only for yourself but also your children, your neighbors, your community and society. Take some time and see for yourself some of the wonderful opportunites that are available at the library.

ahh c'mon it's for the children and the future. Especially our future pensions and paychecks.

Not to mention we will have to raise property taxes after that quarter cent fire department sales tax is passed to get them back where they should be.

Would you rather pay a membership fee? Do you realize that the library has many options to check out books, books that are not written on paper? I agree, the techno world of publishing is forcing libraries to adapt or die. Many publishers print their own books - like scholastic at commandweb here in JC. These publishers will still make money, you can't expect them to not pay authors, you can't expect to always get free books for your Nook/Kindle/Ipad.

Just hurry up and take all of our money and just give us peasants a little to live on. It would be so much easier than having to go to the polls to vote about all these tax increases
