CALIFORNIA, Mo. — A former treasurer of the California Recreation Association has been charged in connection with the disappearance of more than $65,000 from the organization which sponsors youth sporting activities.
Felony charges were filed Wednesday against Janet L. Fitzwater, 47, California — the association’s former treasurer. She was charged with stealing more than $25,000 and five counts of forgery.
The California Recreation Association is a not-for-profit organization that provides youth sports activities, including T-ball, softball, baseball, soccer, basketball and swimming.
Court documents show the Recreation Association Board contacted Sheriff J. Gump about suspicious checks written on the association’s account, after it had reviewed its records covering the period from Jan. 26, 2007, to Jan. 31, 2012.
From that March 15 review, the board found some of the checks appeared to have forged signatures.
