American Legion baseball provides many opportunities

Post 5 opens tourney with pair of wins

The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Senior baseball team has done its share of winning this season. The squad boasts a 19-3 record as it heads toward the district and zone tournaments.

But on an elite team like this, it's not just wins and losses that can make or break a season. At least that's the attitude of first-year head coach Denny Hughes. There's much more at stake, including future baseball ventures.

A few players, such as William Woods' Dyllon Harper, have completed their first year of college baseball. Some have graduated from high school and will soon begin their college career.

Post 5 opened play in the Southwest Illinois Firecracker Tournament with a pair of wins Saturday in Fairview Heights, Ill.

The Seniors will play two games today in the event, facing off with Fairview Heights (Ill.) at 10 a.m. and Champaign (Ill.) at 12:30 p.m.
