US Rep. Emanuel Cleaver helps woman in distress

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver says the lawmaker doesn't want to be portrayed as a hero after stopping to help a woman in distress.

The Democrat was riding in a car Friday in Kansas City when he spotted someone waving a hand from a clump of weeds.

Cleaver's spokeswoman, Michele Rooney, says the congressman told his staffer to stop the car and they ran to investigate. The woman appeared to be going in and out of consciousness.

The Kansas City Star ( ) reported that Cleaver used his coat to help warm the woman and stayed with her until emergency crews arrive. Rooney says Cleaver insists he did what anyone else would have done.

A Kansas City Fire Department spokesman confirmed that emergency crews responded to the area.
