Your Opinion: Conference center site concerns

Dear Editor:

The main project to be funded by an increased sales tax pushed by the Transformation Jefferson City campaign is a conference center.

Two possible locations are proposed. One location is in a congested area on West McCarty, next to our so called “Expressway” with a stop light on every corner, and within view of our infamous highway interchange.

The second location is within the walls of the old Missouri State Penitentiary. Proposed changes appear to include removing many of the stone walls and moving the gas chamber to provide room for building a conference center and a parkway from Lafayette Street to Chestnut Street.

Do Transform Jefferson City proponents really believe that drastically altering the old penitentiary and squeezing it between two new buildings will not reduce its appeal as a historical tourist attraction?

Do they really believe that anyone will be eager to patronize a conference center haunted by the ghosts of executed killers?
