MO woman accused of abandoning infant in MN woods

GAYLORD, Minn. (AP) — A Missouri woman has been returned to Minnesota to face accusations that she left her newborn baby in some woods to die shortly after giving birth in 2001.

Amy Ann Romero is being held in Sibley County on $250,000 conditional bail. She was arrested in Milan, Mo., last week after being indicted on first-degree murder charges in Sibley County District Court.

The indictment unsealed Thursday reveals few details about what happened a decade ago. It only says Romero, now 29, gave birth to a child identified as Ava Juanita Aune on April 28, 2001 and hours later left her to die in some woods near her home in Henderson. The child did not survive.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/yhtY3S) says a grand jury was convened in Gaylord earlier this month.

May we should do a better job of letting these mothers who feel they have no where to go understand they can drop their unwanted children off at a fire station with no questions asked. As a parent, these stories trouble me.

As another alternative - there are agencies that will arrange for the adoption of a baby prior to its birth. That way it has a worm and loving place to go at the time of its birth. Even some attorneys will do this. I just don't understand why these women who kill their children don't put them up for adoption as there are many couples wanting to adopt especially babies. Also, any door step where a person lives is better than putting a baby in the woods to die. I sure would like to know what drives a person to do such things when there are more humane options. It's just sad and horrific what is being done to children.
