Your Opinion: Faith community urged to support tax

Dear Editor:

I urge the Jefferson City faith community to support the Transformation half-cent sales tax because it's the right thing to do and because we all stand to benefit from its success.

Transformation and civic responsibility are central ideas within our faith communities. The transformed individual who receives grace and gets a second chance is a tenet held dear by all faiths.

As for civic responsibility, it starts with the call to serve others and to serve community. To put others first is the highest of virtues, a standard set by none other than Christ himself. Christian responsibility to be a good citizen finds its source in the Bible where strong communities and healthy families are valued. The early church recognized that good citizenship endeared them to the temporal authorities, which allowed the church to go about its mission in an otherwise hostile society and world.

So why should the faith community support Transform Jefferson City?

We should support it because it is the right thing to do. Transform Jefferson City focuses on the renewal of a part of our city formerly neglected, but now glistening with bright prospect for the future with the support of the rest of the community. According to the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce, this is an economic development plan for our community that calls on all of us to invest in projects that will improve the quality of our community, secure our city's long-term economic vitality and be the catalyst for revitalizing our community's core.

We should support Transform Jefferson City because we all stand to benefit. Congregations, especially those located in the heart of the city have the potential to share in the renewal and revitalization of the neighborhood.

A recent guest lecturer shared data with our older downtown church that predicted our funeral and those of other congregations like ours if we do not experience transformation. Getting a new generation to catch a vision for service through our congregations may be our best chance to survive. Transform Jefferson City embraces youth movement, with a commitment and a plan to reach younger generations. Our congregations share that value and that need.

Will we stand idly by and watch opportunity pass us or will we take hold of our future and join with our community to see transformation happen.
