Custard, burger shop to open on boulevard

photo

Workers quickly cover masonry work as rain begins to fall steadily on a site under construction for a new retail facility on Missouri Boulevard. This is the location formerly occupied by Spectator’s bar, which moved to High Street in downtown Jefferson City.

The former location of Spectator’s Sports Bar & Billards on Missouri Boulevard is being developed into a strip mall with room for three or four businesses, one of which will be a Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers restaurant.

The restaurant plans to open around May 15, said Eric Cole, president for M&M Custard LLC, which is the franchisee for Freddy’s in central Missouri.

How about a Cracker Barrel? Lake Ozark is getting one-- why can't we have one too? Jefferson City is the crossroads for US 50, 54, and 63. We have a train station, and an airport. We ought to have enough here for a Cracker Barrel.

JCsleeper 1 year, 3 months ago

Cracker Barrel doesn't have a drive thru or a buffet. Probably wouldn't do too well in JC.

Missing Krispy Kreme these days...There is a severe need for a donut shop in this town. There is NOT a need for another burger place (unless it is a Five Guys). Cracker Barrel is not for the ignorant fat and/or elderly people, but I agree that we do not need a plethora of chain restaurants adding to the mix. Instead, why can't someone open a nice upper-end-menu that actually serves quality food? High prices do NOT equal fine dining and TRUE fine dining does not exist in this town...at least none that I have found in the past 12 months I've lived here.

True dat on the lack of good, quality food. Everything here is warmed up Sysco truck food.

oops, I started posting a bit ago, got distracted and just got back to finishing it. Do you agree that they are absolutely one of the best if not the best bakery in town?

0

xhepera 1 year, 3 months ago

We have Daylight Donuts on the boulevard. They're pretty good. We also have one of the best bakeries I've ever experienced, and I've been to some "hoity-toity" bakeries in major metropolitan areas. BK Bakery can compete with the best of 'em!

How about a big casino with greasy burgers and fries! And of course booze. And bring back Woolworth stores and dime stores and Elvis.

There's a new restaurant opening where C Dub's used to be (on Dunklin). I forget what the sign said, but it was a pasta house of some sort and it didn't look like a chain. We used to have a frozen yogurt shop on the Blvd. - anyone remember TCBY?

Maybe one of the other stores will be something different. JC seems to be stretching its horizons in food choices (Chim's, Fuji, Love Sushi) ... let's hope it's a continuing trend.

Just give me White Castle!

24 hour donut shop uptown!!! That would be so cool! Especially if it had a drive-thru window in the back alley!!!

The Indian restaurant, Hot Millions, near Mosers, is darn good. So is Love Sushi. Dominico's is a bit pricey but the food is great, and for my money it is the best steak in town. Coffee Zone and Paddy Malone's downtown have pretty good food. The fun thing about Chim's is that it is BYOB. The Arris' cafe across the expressway is very good. The Summit Lake Winery food needs some work, but I wish I could drink a bottle of their Lewis and Clark for every meal. Santa Cruz off Industrial is pretty fun. Prison Brews is getting better, and the bocce ball court out back was a stroke of genius. Best place for fried chicken is Nick's out at the airport.

I was very sad that some jagoff tore down Veit's on the boulevard and left a vacant lot.

Of course, nothing beats an Arris' pizza, but you all know that.

A fun place for an after-dinner drink is the top of the Doubletree Hotel. Nothing special, it always makes me feel like a gangster.

That's about all I know.

All in all, the food in Jefferson City is better than I've ever seen it.

Chipotle has a lot of going for it: meat is local - pork is purchased from someone east of town. Overall, the menu is really quite healthy. I enjoy it and I like to sit outside to eat - weather permitting, of course.

Gotta tell ya that Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers isn't your "average" burger chain ... it's a family oriented atmosphere!! The namesake is a World War II veteran who's brought his family's steakburger recipe to this concept. It's really a great product. It's not your typical concept. They also have Chicago Dogs and fantastic frozen custard products.

I've eaten at Freddy's in Branson and found it to be not much different than Steak n Shake or Culver's when it comes to their burgers.

Ok, but this time let's not have a repeat of Arby's opening.

Where will the shuttle bus pick everyone up at this time??

0

RobHunterJohnson 1 year, 3 months ago

Jefferson City needs a Interstate Highway to pass through, then more places would pay attention! Rob

0

spelchek 1 year, 3 months ago

You can blame Eisenhower for that.

0

JCsleeper 1 year, 3 months ago

Interstate? This is the little town that doesn't want anyone driving over 55mph and has proposed bannng jake brakes.

0

JCLifer 1 year, 3 months ago

I can see a six-lane interstate with a 40 mph speed limit and several stoplights!

The new Munichburg Tavern on W. Elm has better food than Prison Brews and an AMAZING beer selection. The people who own it are the ones who originally opened PB. They have a Bocce Ball court too so I have a feeling they're going to give PB a run for their money once more people know about them.

I had no idea Chim's was BYOB ... a nice dark beer would go great with some spicy noodles.

i second that. its unusual to have such a nice place in a small town such as jefferson city.

Have to laugh on the commenter who posted it's bringing jobs. Yeah, minimum wage jobs, big deal! What this town needs is not more strip mall stores and restaurants that hire low income, low skilled workers, it needs real INDUSTRY!! We need high paying skilled jobs for professionals if we ever hope to keep young folks here and develop into any sort of attractive place for people to move here and plan to prosper.

0

JCLifer 1 year, 3 months ago

High-skill technical jobs sure would be nice. Better than more minimum wage no-skill jobs that just bring in more transient riff-raff.

0

Sequoia 1 year, 3 months ago

If you want industry and skilled jobs, do you support government (federal, state, and/or local) investment in construction and infrastructure to put skilled tradespeople to work and attract new private investment?

Does government have a role in working with the private market to make jeff city an attractive place for the market to invest? If not, what is the alternative? Sit around and hope for change?

0

JCLifer 1 year, 3 months ago

I wish local government would improve the streets and implement an effective maintenance schedule. They need to install more curb and guttering. Stomwater and drainage continues to be a problem in many areas. We certainly need more sidewalks built and put in both neighborhoods and along main streets like Missouri Blvd. Our parks all need lots of work and upgrading, and a larger multipurpose community cernter would get lots of use. We need to take many of our existing amenities and make them nicer and more serviceable for local residents to use.

As for more industry, this town needs to attract some advanced and precision manufacturing. Biomedical industry, data warehousing, and other high-skill, high-paying jobs. With Linn State Tech, and Lincoln University, we should be able to attract several high-tech research and production industries to invest here if the town were nicer for residents.

Of course we also need to do a lot of work on our school system, but that will be yet another big tax increase to rebuild our local school system after years of neglect and academic decay. We need to develop a master plan for the community and work each tax increase in at a time.

How about another Nuclear Plant? Rob

Only with private investment.

Another great restaurant/bar is Twin Bridges Bar and Grill out at Hwy 54 and CC. New owners took over in May and the food is fantastic. One of the owners was the Chef at Truman Hotel before they took over this place. It's a great place to eat, drink and listen to live music on the weekends. And it's not as far out as most people think.
