What is Transformation?

Projects can fall into five project areas

Transformation, now known as the Transform Jeff City campaign, is the economic development strategic plan put forward by the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce that proposes a 10-year half-cent economic development sales tax, which is being sponsored by the city and is on the Feb. 7 ballot.

The News Tribune has broken down the list of 30 projects, with a total price tag of $40.987 million, into five different categories, summarizing each project and showing the individual costs associated with each.

Summaries of these five different categories:

Summaries of MSP/Conference Center projects

Summaries of Retail and Angel Network projects

Summaries of riverfront development projects

Summaries of St. Mary's Redevelopment and Lincoln University Transformation projects

Summaries of Old Town, Capitol Avenue and Downtown Transformation projects

Additional articles about the Transformation proposal:

PRO: Transformation is good for Jefferson City

CON: Sales tax puts undue burden on citizens

Readers ask plan’s fans: Is Transformation really a wise investment?

Have you all ever played the game Sim City? If you raise taxes too much (usually above 8%) the people start moving away. It doesn't matter what attractions you add to the city, once the people are pinched that hard, they start relocating to the neighboring cities.

$25,000 to develop a smart phone app for the downtown merchants?!?! Are they planning to hire Steve Jobs to write it? Let a Lincoln student write it fo free.

The plan is full of waste. Vote NO.

Who retains ownership of the old St. Marys campus after we sink several millions of taxpayer dolleras into that private property?

Not a problem to shop Columbia if this passes.

Not a problem to pay more in Columbia, regardless of what happens with Transformation. There are currently 11 TDDs in Columbia which are affiliated with many of the major retail locations there, and most levy an additional 1%--not the half of a percent Transformation is proposing.

TDDs are Transportation Development Districts. TDDs pay for public improvements associated with a development--such as a highway overpass, etc.

There are 11 of them in Columbia.

$100,000 for signs in a flood plain (Millbottom)? $4 MILLION for "streetscapes"??? $8 Million to renovate private property at St. Mary's? And $25,000 to "study" a mall with a failed business plan? This isn't monopoly money, it's MY money and I SAY NO! HECK NO!

Speaking of street scapes- maybe they could use some of this money to paint over that grafiti mural at West McCarty and the entrance ramp to Eastbound 54 (Mo River Bridge). That retaining wall looks so ghetto and is a blight on this city.
