A Holts Summit youth faces a string of charges, including murder and assaulting law enforcement after allegedly killing a 60-year-old woman and shooting at law enforcement officers in Holts Summit Friday.
Ryan Wayne Koebel, 17, is accused of fatally stabbing and shooting his grandmother, 60-year-old Karen Cates, Friday morning before leaving their home armed with a .38 caliber handgun which he later used to shoot at Missouri State Highway Patrol and Holts Summit Police Department officers as he walked along Highway 54.
Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney Chris Wilson filed charges of one count first-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and four counts of armed criminal action against Koebel Saturday morning.
At 10:29 a.m. Friday, the Emergency Operations Center in Fulton received a 911 call reporting a stabbing in the 800 block of Nieman Road in Holts Summit.
Holts Summit Police Officer Marc Haycook said police found a 60-year-old woman inside the residence, bleeding.
"It was determined that the woman had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and cuts from a sharp-edged weapon of some type," Haycook said. "At this time, we cannot release the name of the female victim because it is an ongoing investigation.
"We do have a suspect in custody at this time. He has not been charged with the crime, but he is in custody."
Haycook said the name of the person under arrest would be released after someone is charged with the homicide.
He said investigators will be seeking a motive for the killing, but it was unknown Friday.
Sgt. Paul Reinsch, a Highway Patrol information officer, said shortly after the Nieman Road incident was reported in Holts Summit, a state trooper traveling east on U.S. 54 saw a man walking west along the highway's shoulder, at the south edge of Holts Summit.
As the patrolman went by, he saw the man brandish a weapon in his direction.
"The officer turned his vehicle around in order to come back and approach the individual," Reinsch said. "As he approached, that individual pulled a weapon out and shot at the state trooper.
"At that time the patrolman used his vehicle to strike the individual, who was injured and taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City."
He said the man hit by the patrol vehicle was treated at the hospital, then taken to the Callaway County Jail.
"We believe that he is connected to the other incident this morning," Reinsch said.
Reinsch said the original call about the murder occurred at 10:29 a.m.
And, at 10:55 a.m., the patrolman reported he had struck the individual with the vehicle.
Reinsch said no officers, or anyone else, appeared to be injured by the gunfire from the man walking along the road.
He said investigators have not yet determined if the patrol vehicle was hit by the gunfire, or how many shots were fired.
He said the name of the patrol officer will not be released.
In another incident that may or may not be connected to the homicide, Holts Summit police are asking for information from the public about a girl who was shot early Friday in her mobile home at Seges Mobile Home Park, in the 100 block of North Summit Drive.
At 1:20 a.m. Friday, an off-duty Callaway County deputy heard shots fired near Moser's grocery store, on West Simon Boulevard in Holts Summit.
Haycook said a report was received from a family member of the shooting victim in the 100 block of North Summit Drive, which is in the same area of the first reported gunshots heard by the deputy.
Investigators found three bullet holes in the mobile home.
One of those bullets hit the young girl in the leg, as she was sleeping in her bed.
The girl was treated at a hospital and is in good condition, Haycook said.
"At this time," Haycook said at a press briefing Friday afternoon, "we have no further information. That is why we are asking for the help of the public.
"If anybody heard something or saw a vehicle, we ask that they contact Detective Mark Beardsley at the Holts Summit Police Department or they can contact Callaway County Crime Stoppers (at) 573-592-2474."
Haycook said it isn't known whether the early morning shooting of the girl and the mid-morning killing of the woman - about two miles apart - are connected.
"We are investigating," Haycook said.
Holts Summit Police Chief Kyle McIntyre added: "It's been a long night and day.
"We had so many serious incidents within a relatively short period of time."

A 60-year-old woman has been killed in Callaway County, and authorities believe there's a link to a man who shot at a law enforcement vehicle on U.S. 54.
Holts Summit police found the woman dead in her home around 10:30 a.m. Friday after getting a call from a relative. She had been shot and struck with a sharp-edged weapon. Her name has not been released.
A short time later, a Highway Patrol trooper noticed a man walking along U.S. 54 in Holts Summit with what looked like a weapon. The patrol says the man fired at the trooper, who hit the man with his vehicle.
The unidentified man is in custody in Callaway County after being treated at a hospital in nearby Jefferson City.
Police believe the two cases are related.

Holts Summit Police are investigating three recent violent crimes that include a shooting incident, a fatal stabbing and a man walking along the highway firing a weapon.
Details of the three incidents are sketchy and the Holts Summit Police and Missouri State Highway Patrol plan a joint press conference later today after more details are known.
Holts Summit Police Chief Kyle McIntyre said in the latest incident police received a report of a man walking along U.S. 54 firing a weapon shortly after 10:30 a.m. today.
The man eventually was hit by a highway patrol vehicle and hospitalized in serious condition.
Sgt. Paul Reinsch, a spokesman for the highway patrol, said the name of the man firing the weapon who was apprehended when hit by a patrol car is not known at this time but would be announced later.
Reinsch said the man was taken first to St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City and then later to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.
The fatal stabbing on Friday morning was at 851 Nieman Road in Holts Summit.
