State of the Judiciary

In his first address to Missouri lawmakers as the state Supreme Court's chief justice, Judge Richard Teitelman emphasized public service and cooperation among the three branches of government.

Unlike some of his predecessors, Teitelman spent little time in his 12-minute address urging lawmakers to take action, although he did note the recent report of the state's Working Group on Sentencing and Corrections.

It suggested ways to improve prison sentencing and parole orders, so the Corrections Department can manage its institutions better and save money.

"I support your efforts to help make sentencing practices more cost-effective," Teitelman said.

He also thanked lawmakers for their continuing support of the state court system's automation efforts.
