Your Opinion: Cartoon reflects financial self-discipline

Dear Editor:

Jim Dyke's New Year's Eve cartoon re-run was a "breath of fresh air." I am referring specifically to the "Rich/Poor, Little House/Big House" cartoon. A "McMansion" with mucho debt was juxtaposed with a "small house paid for."

It is easy for us to want more than we can afford. We are bombarded with messages to "buy more" and to "keep up with the Joneses."

Financial self-discipline is not easy. It must be learned.

Sometimes there is a tendency to covet what the other guy has. This may be against some of the admonitions in Christian scripture.

One of the first rules of financial success is to not spend more money than you are taking in. More people need to learn this.

In the words of that small-town Missouri boy who did well, Walt Disney, "It's what you do with what you've got that counts."

Thank you, again, Jim Dyke.
