Your Opinion: Invest in our community

Dear Editor;

The state of the economy is our number one concern. No matter what circle of people we are with the majority state they have been impacted negatively by the economy - loss of job, reduced hours, reduced orders, loss of business accounts, extended job searches and the list goes on. We are in a very tenuous place.

However, we have an opportunity to invest in our future. We can each contribute to improving the local economy by supporting the Transformation sales tax. By approving a half-cent sales tax, our local economy will receive a $40 million stimulus. This investment will result in local spending.

Initially, the professional service sectors will begin work on projects. This creates spending on business products, printing, and marketing and pre-construction activities such as job specific research job training.

Next, construction activities begin that result in jobs, construction goods, supplies, fuel, and disposable spending.

More than 30 projects will move forward through a citizen-designed and citizen-managed process. Improvements to our downtown, the Missouri State Penitentiary, the soon to be former St. Mary's Hospital, conference center and Old Town will become tangible. Once completed, these community assets will generate future economic and development growth in Jefferson City.

We can make a difference. As a community, we can enable a $40 million stimulus by applying $.50 for each $100 in spending.

Transform Jefferson City and vote yes Feb. 7.
