Commission urges 90-minute meters on Jefferson Street
Thursday, January 12, 2012
The Jefferson City Council soon will review a recommendation to change the two-hour meters on the 300 block of Jefferson Street to 90-minute meters.
Since earlier consideration, the Transportation and Traffic Commission received some input from business owners in the area such as Louis Landwehr with Winter-Dent & Company, who indicated a one-hour limit would be difficult for his customers to abide by, though he indicated a 90-minute limit would be acceptable.

Get rid of these freakin meters. They are especially unrealistc around the Truman building and Gov's Hotel.....these really do nothing but provide fast cash and nothng to do with regulating parking in these areas of down town.

Agree with getting rid of the meters. Draconian and do a lot to discourage people from shopping uptown because of all the empty spaces that are not used because people don't want to park there for an hour or two.
Everyday one can see that over 3/4 of the metered spaces sit empty all day. Why not let people park there? You would be SERVING the public rather than sending a cold unfriendly message that uptown does not desire visitors.
If you cannot get rid of the meters, at least make them 4-hour meters. Let people fill them up and feed them- that way the city would be taking in more revenue, and the public would be recieving a convenience that they would gladly pay for.
What you have now is the WORST of both worlds. You don't encourage anyone to park uptown, and you don't allow them to pay to park there for 4-8 hours if they want to. You are also wasting precious parking spaces that sit there empty all day. The current situation is a LOSE-LOSE situation.
I hope Roger Schwartz can bring some sense to City Hall. He is a smart man if anyone will listen to him. This cold unfriendly city needs to change its attitude if it ever wants to grow.

I suggest getting rid of the meters, make High street one way from the Capitol to the Courthouse and put angle parking on one side of the street. Currently traffic stops when someone is trying to park, as it appears many have great difficulty in parallel parking due to its low usage.
