Your Opinion: Tax proponents need reality check
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
A reality check is in order for the City Council and Chamber of Commerce. Their dreams of transforming uptown is ludicrous.
The crumbling prison, the state still owns and St. Mary’s Hospital, the city does not own either, is for what? A convention/hotel center when the existing hotels are hardly ever full is a non-starter. This would be in direct competition with the existing hotels. What was the hotel tax for then?
Streetscape uptown, are you kidding? This looks like blatant self interest at its best.
All this in one of the worst economic times we’ve been in. Why don’t you get your uptown parking situation fixed before you try to streetscape? It would be laughable if it wasn’t so serious. And, all this is for what? No accountability, no audits, just your word that things will be okay because you said so.
In 10 years not one of you will be on the council and most will be gone from the chamber. I don’t trust the dream/transformation tax in any way.
Vote no Feb. 7, keep your money and they can dream on.
And, just as aside to the council and chamber, check out the Characterplus program. It’s an agenda you should follow i.e. accountability, trustworthiness, responsibility for a start! Get it?
