City maps out use of sales tax F funds

With collection to begin in April, the city has established a preliminary list of projects and uses for funds from the capital improvements sales tax F.

At a City Council work session Monday, department heads laid out a general idea of how their portion of funds will be used, from road work to IT software. The tax is estimated to bring in $26 million throughout the next five years.

Public Works, which receives 59 percent of the sales tax funds, has set aside $6 million for street overlays and $600,000 for sidewalks. Roger Schwartze, public works director, said Missouri Boulevard will be one sidewalk project, with the help of funds from the Missouri Department of Transportation. The area is slated for construction of sidewalks from Kansas Street to the Kohls development area.

Public safety departments are set to receive 19 percent of tax funds to upgrade and replace equipment, as well as facilities. Police Chief Roger Schroeder said the

department is housed in a 34-year-old building, but has doubled in size since moving into the facility. The department is

looking at renovations to floors and the locker area.
