St. Louis area complains of district loss

Several St. Louis area lawmakers are extremely unhappy with new Missouri Senate districts proposed by a residents' commission.

"This map is totally unacceptable," state Sen. Jim Lembke, R-Lemay, said Thursday afternoon. "It affected our districts in a very negative way."

Sen. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield, who is ending her first term in the state Senate and was planning to run for re-election, lost her district in the map-drawing process.

She currently serves the 7th District but, under the proposed map, that district has been moved to Kansas City. And Cunningham's West St. Louis County home will move into the 26th District, home of Sen. Brian Nieves, R-Franklin - whose seat won't be on the ballot again until 2014.

"It is a travesty," Cunningham said of the new map.
