MARANA, Ariz. (AP) - Lee Westwood got his revenge on Nick Watney and moved a step closer to a shot at regaining the No. 1 ranking Friday in the Match Play Championship.
Westwood, eliminated at Dove Mountain each of the last two years by Watney, birdied the opening two holes and pulled away when Watney missed too many short putts. He advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-and-2 win.
Rory McIlroy also can go to No. 1 by winning the Match Play. He advanced with a 3-and-1 win over Miguel Angel Jimenez.
If they win their matches Saturday, McIlroy and Westwood would meet in the semifinals Sunday morning.
Hunter Mahan won big over Steve Stricker, and Matt Kuchar defeated Martin Kaymer. Mahan and Kuchar next play in the quarterfinals, assuring an American will get to the semifinals for the first time since 2009.
In the battle of Scotland, Martin Laird outlasted Paul Lawrie.
Peter Hanson of Sweden birdied the first three holes and beat Brandt Snedeker to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in five attempts. Hanson next plays Mark Wilson, who is showing that good putting trumps big drives in match play.
Wilson won four straight holes early in his match, starting with a 25-foot birdie putt at No. 3, and beat Dustin Johnson, 4 and 3. It was the second straight year that Wilson has eliminated Johnson.
Bae Sang-moon defeated John Senden 1 up in the only match that went the distance.
MAYAKOBA CLASSIC
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) - Daniel Summerhays birdied the final hole Friday for a 6-under 65 and a share of the second-round lead with Will Claxton and Greg Owen in the wind-swept Mayakoba Golf Classic.
Claxton, the first-round leader, shot a 68, and Owen had his second straight 67 to match Summerhays at 8-under 134 on the El Camaleon course.
Chris Stroud was a stroke back after a 66, and Robert Allenby, Kevin Stadler and Richard S. Johnson followed at 6 under. Allenby shot 67, Stadler 68, and Johnson 66.
Summerhays had seven birdies and a bogey. The 28-year-old former BYU player made only eight cuts in 29 PGA Tour starts last season.
Greg Norman missed the cut with rounds of 79 and 73. The 57-year-old Norman designed the seaside course.
HSBC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS
SINGAPORE (AP) - Katie Futcher and Jenny Shin shot 5-under 67s in the HSBC Women's Champions on Friday to join first-round leader Angela Stanford at the top of the leaderboard.
Futcher and Shin both had six birdies and one bogey to reach 8-under 136 and tie Stanford, who had a 70, on a day temperatures reached the low 90s.
South Korea's Hee Young Park (68), compatriot Na Yeon Choi (71) and Japan's Ai Miyazato (70) were at 5 under at Tanah Merah Country Club.
World No. 1 Yani Tseng struggled to a 72, but said her sore elbow wasn't to blame. Tseng had two birdies and two bogeys and is tied for 20th at 1 under.
The 63-player field in the $1.4 million tournament includes 18 of the top 20 in world rankings.
