At the last minute and for the second time in as many years the would-be developers of the troublingly impractical Hayselton Drive Ghost Subdivision withdrew their application before the City Council. Thus, the developers avoided a public hearing and more to the point a vote by the City Council.
Several thoughts spring to mind, the least of which is that the developers knew for a certainty the council would not approve their plan.
Other, more important thoughts are worthy of consideration, particularly in the wake of confusion following the vote to non-transform Jefferson City.
Some important thoughts to be considered before trying to transform Jefferson City, or trying to transform an established Jefferson City neighborhood are: the nature of our political community; the difference between what is good and what is goodwill; the distinction of possible from practical; and some advice from Aristotle on prosperity.
There are very rich people in Jefferson City and there are very poor people, but the middle class makes up the bulk of our citizens and administrators. Our political community is composed of neighborhoods like the Hayselton Drive area, which, when united, will always be strong enough to turn the scales.
There may be different reasons for concluding the same idea is good. Say, for example, it is good to prevent a subdivision proposal on Hayselton Drive for many reasons. When someone joins with others who agree on what is good then there is goodwill. And, the Hayselton Drive area is full of goodwill which leads to a bond of friendship and trust. At this point, any mock attention to concerns are hogwash.
It is not practical to access any of the land in question from Main Street. It is not possible to gain access to the land from the hairpin turn at the fare eastern edge of Hayselton Drive.
Dick Otke is wealthy and successful. Mike Bates is the same. Paul and Rayma Chinn own properties from Florida to Missouri. All are professionals in land speculation developments. There is no need to feel sorry for them. To quote Aristotle, "There is no man who is prosperous in all things."
The Hayselton community awaits the nest swing. Three strikes an' yer out.
