Ike Skelton to receive Truman Good Neighbor award

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton will receive this year's Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award.

Skelton represented Missouri's 4th Congressional District from 1976 through January 2011.

The award is handed out every year on the anniversary of the former president's birthday.

Karl Zobrist, president of the foundation that bestows the award, says Skelton's legacy of monitoring U.S. armed forces while he served in Congress was consistent with Truman's efforts to improve military policies.

Skelton will receive the award May 8 in a luncheon in Kansas City.
