Your Opinion: 'Vacant,' but not 'abandoned'

Dear Editor:

We are writing this letter to clear up a misconception that your reporter, Michelle Brooks, gave in her recent article about the renovation of the building at 1015 E. Atchison Street into a community center.

Ms. Brooks specifically said the building was “abandoned”, giving the impression that it did not belong to anyone. This is untrue. We were the legal owners of the property and although it had been vacant for 10 years, it was never abandoned. That would suggest we abdicated our responsibilities as property owners to pay legitimate taxes on the property.

We owned the building from 1998 until we sold it in 2010.

Issue-oriented letters to the editor in response to this or about other local topics are welcome. All letters should be limited to 400 words. The author's name must appear with the letter, and the name, address and phone number provided for verification. Letters that cannot be verified by telephone will not be published. Send letters for publication to editor@newstribune.com
