Woman wounded in shooting
Monday, February 13, 2012
A 19-year-old woman was shot and injured early Saturday at Club Motivation, a troubled “after-hours” nightspot formerly known as College Complex. Police are still investigating, and said the business has been uncooperative.
In recent years, police have responded more than 120 times to the club under its current or former name for incidents ranging from noise violations to shootings. Earlier this month, the city proposed a bill to better regulate “after-hours” businesses such as Club Motivation that don’t sell liquor and aren’t forced to close when bars do.
Jefferson City police responded to the business at 2425 Industrial Drive about 4 a.m., responding to multiple shots being fired there, according to a news release from Capt. Bob Clark.
They determined a fight started inside the business then moved outside. No one at the scene provided information to police.

The citizens of Jefferson City should have a lot of questions that need to be addressed following this last episode of violence that has occurred at Club Motivation. Questions I’d like addressed are: If Club Motivation is simply a “juice bar” why does it have security personnel both inside and outside of the establishment? Do other establishments, to include those that serve alcohol, routinely hire “security personnel” to provide both inside and outside safety? Also, how many establishments that sell alcohol, use metal detectors at their entrances? How long after this recent shooting was it before the girl went to the hospital? If she in fact had been an innocent bystander, wouldn’t she go immediately? Upon her arrival, wouldn’t she willingly provide information to identify the shooter(s)? If not, why not arrest her for interfering with police, then when she appears in court, the judge could have her held in contempt until she assisted in the identification of her assailant? Why not require the owners/operators of Club Motivation install sufficient lighting on their parking lot, so that their “hired” security personnel would be able to see/identify those causing trouble. I realize that as a result of current court rulings, on profiling, that police cannot simply stop people for congregating in an area, but there needs to be a way for the police to identify troublemakers before another shooting, stabbing, or death results from activities at this club. I’m also afraid that if Jefferson City simply passes an ordinance, the violence will simply move to another location (possibly the sports complex north of the city) which, while it may remove it from the city, would only increase the law enforcement/emergency response time to the site.

The city is more interested in trying to figure out how to close down Cirilla's rather than controlling these after hours trouble spots.

Don't forget that evil tattoo shop that ruined Christmas for everybody.

That is crazy. Does someone have to die before they do something?
Shut it down. It is not a racial issue, it is a safety issue.

Or just let them shoot each other and solve the problem with all these thugs.

Not to break the backs of the public, but I'm sure most peaceful citizens would understand why it's being done and would gladly comply with the authorities. I say give the Police the legal authority to be more proactive. I'm not saying violate anyones legal rights, but I am saying it isn't realistic for us to ask the Cops to get a hold on this criminal activity, when we're asking them to do it with their hands tied. It's time for the kid gloves to come off.

OR have JCPD out there when the club let's out..like they do for the bars downtown..seems to me they are being more reactive when they could be proactive..this same club had NO problems when they worked with the sheriffs dept and had officers in the parking lot..'or let them shoot each other' has to be the most underline racist comment yet..

taxpayer, The bars downtown REQUEST JCPD be there when they let out. They understand the true role of the police is to serve and protect. No one at these "after hours" places wants the "po-po" there to ruin their thug time. I say the city gives them a warning that if it happens again they will pull their business license and ban these "types" of clubs from opening in the city/county. nothing there has ever been worth the water in the toilet. Funny thing i its connected to a bar that (as well as i can recall) hasnt had any trouble and they serve alcohol......

It is how you manage the clients, 120 times is enough. Rob

City should crack down. The danger is not just to the patrons (who must know something about what they're getting into) but to the police and innocent bystanders as well. Private freedom stops when it affects the community negatively. Just like health care, emergency response is much more costly than prevention. Give them one more chance to clean themselves up, then pull the plug.

This will come to a head when a shooting occurs on Industrial that sends stray bullets onto West Main and a nun or child sleeping in their house takes a bullet meant for someone else.
The answer isn't more laws and more police power to be abused by applying it subjectively as the community elite and city council see fit. 120 calls to the same location indicates to me that whatever response the city has made is ineffective. Are the laws as they are already written being enforced? Do the police patrol there without being called first? Have any undercovers been assigned to work there?
Guess what? When you throw a bunch of animals in the same cage, they're going to act like animals. Because for some reason they do not have the common sense or coping skills to handle conflict without violence. Sociologists can argue whether it's genetic or the environment, but clearly, without the structure of a visible law enforcement presence to signal an immediate deterrant to crime, there is an element in society that is not capable of conducting themselves in a lawful manner. The police already have sufficient laws and city codes in place. They just need to be present on a regular basis and strictly enforce them until the crime rate and number of calls for service in this location is reduced to be in line with the rest of the city.
