Your Opinion: Site permit effort wins appreciation
Saturday, February 11, 2012
I am writing this letter to publicly thank Rep. Jeanie Riddle for filing HB1316, the site permit legislation, which could lead to the construction of a second nuclear power plant in Missouri.
I worked for 10 years on the first nuclear plant at Callaway. I know first-hand the importance of a nuclear plant to a state like Missouri in terms of jobs. For me and my co-workers — we were able to pay down our mortgages, put our kids through college and save for retirement. The nuclear plant at Callaway meant high-paying, reliable jobs for us, and secure futures for our families. Furthermore, I like the idea that Missouri is generating its own energy and we are not dependent on outside sources or susceptible to fluctuating fuel prices.
This is a long-term solution for our state. I also know that Rep. Riddle’s bill will keep our rates low and protect us from unforeseen rate increases on our electric bill. And that’s good for Missouri consumers.
Missouri needs a second nuclear power plant at Callaway now more than ever. It is good for our economy, it creates jobs, and it is good for our long-term energy future.
Thank you, Rep. Riddle, for your leadership on this critical issue.
