The Jefferson City Jays are about where head coach Phil Cagle thought they would be after the first day of the Class 4 District 3 wrestling tournament.
But they were oh-so-close to being better than expected.
The Jays lost a pair of quarterfinal matches in overtime and sit in third place after Friday's action at Fleming Fieldhouse.
Ozark is in first place with 66 points. Defending Class 4 state champion Blue Springs is second with 61, followed by the Jays with 50. The Jays finished third as a team in last year's district tournament.
All 14 wrestlers for Jefferson City are still alive, and five advanced to today's semifinals.
