Senate endorses college transfer credit library
Thursday, February 9, 2012
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri senators have endorsed a bill that could make life a little easier for college transfer students.
The Senate gave first-round approval Wednesday to a bill that would require public college and universities to designate 25 lower-level college courses for which students can receive credit if they transfer to a new school elsewhere in Missouri
Sponsoring Sen. David Pearce has said such a library could make it easier for students to transfer coursework and finish their bachelor’s degrees.
Transfer students sometimes lose credit for courses they have already passed at their old school if a course doesn’t meet the academic requirements of their new school.
The Senate must approve the legislation once more before it goes to the House.

Although in general I really support anything that makes it easier for people to attend and complete college, it seems like the Legislature is micromanaging our colleges and universities by proposing such specific laws. Wouldn't it be better to let the state Board of Curators or some other responsible body of higher education governance make the decision about uniformity of transfer credits? Thank you.

How about putting every public college and university in Missouri under one system University of Missouri system-- kind of like Indiana- Purdue? If it was arranged that way, we would not need a Coordinating Board of Higher Education, or a Missouri Department of Higher Education.
The state colleges/universities should all operate out of one common system and one set of rules. No wonder things are such a mess.
Having all these separate boards and high-dollar administrators has got to be very expensive for all the redundancy.
