At the Administration Committee meeting Wednesday, interim Jefferson City Counselor Drew Hilpert said the city has become aware of a number of businesses operating without a license throughout the area. While this has been an issue for a number of years, he said it has become a larger problem than previously realized, something he believes could be tied back to the relatively low penalty for not having a license.

Please tell us...me what business are operating without a license here in Jeff? Also...if there was such a business(s) operating illegally a few months why didn't ya deal with the issue then. I hope it's not the case, but honestly speaking this sounds like somebody is POed that the 1/2 cents sales tax deal got smashed and so now the ciyt is lookig for another way to generate revenue.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck, it must be a duck. Wonder how many businesses aren't paying their taxes also?

ah good ol jc. the first question when applying for a license shouldn't be "and you are kin to who?".

Great. Thanks again Jefferson City. You guys really know how to take care of business. This is a really important issue to focus on. I mean, wouldn't it be terrible if someone was creating jobs without your approval and without you getting a cut? Maybe you could raise the business license fees for us? Do me a favor and come up with something that might actually make it easier for businesses to operate.

Depends on what kinds of jobs your creating JC. More minimum wage jobs are not going to attract the "Young Professionals" that the city covets so much. How about the city try to attract more mid to higher income wages instead of the minimum wage jobs that business owners around here want to open. It seems the service industry jobs are the only jobs the Chamber of Commerce wants to bring here. I saw a post the other day where someone was advocating the same issue. Better paying jobs bring a better tax base. What do you want the taxpayers to do for you? Build you a building, pay your bills for you while you take the profits from your business and put it in an oversees account to draw interest on it and never expand your business to hire more workers? That seems like that is the current business model in America.

Meanwhile, we have licensed businesses fulluy compliant with the city's little licensing laws that have filthy dirty facilities, junk all over their properties, buildings falling apart, tall weeds and grass, restaurants with buffets of lukewarm food sitting out for days, filthy dirty rest rooms with no hand soap, no hot water, and no paper towels.

Take a drive down East McCarty from Laufayette Street out to the Wal-Mart's Roundabouts. Make a list of every "Licensed business" that looks like an eyesore with trash and stuff laying all around, junk cars parked all over, weeds and piles of rocks and buildings falling apart. That isn't the only area in Jefferson City, but it is certainly a mile or so of blight that is so easy to see.

Good Job, City Hall! Try for yet another tax increase!

Why not convert one of the housing units at the MSP site to a dormitory and put the politicians up there. Take their $98 per day per diem and that would bring in some needed upkeep money.

Nice! The way the economy is just punch the little guy in the face. Time to move them outside of the city sounds to me like. This town is corrupt, hypocritical , and stale ! As long as these old foogies don't want anything modern, ya'll can keep your permits, licenses and your convention center and shove it you know where !
