Man seeking safer Missouri shot, killed

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A 55-year-old St. Louis man has died after being shot while carrying petitions to support a local ballot initiative about control of the St. Louis Police Department.

St. Louis police found Darryl Winston shot in an alley Tuesday night. He died at a hospital Wednesday morning.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/xZylHM ) reports Winston was carrying petitions for A Safer Missouri Citizens' Coalition, which is sponsoring a ballot initiative to return control of the St. Louis police department to the city from the state.

A Safer Missouri Citizens' Coalition contracted with National Petition Management to hire workers to collect signatures.

The group says it's unlikely Winston would have been collecting signatures at the time of the shooting because the company doesn't have workers out that late at night.
