Jefferson City East Side pioneer remembered

Juanita Donehue, a well-known Jefferson City businesswoman who led a business revival on the city's Central East Side with the opening of O'Donoghue's Steaks and Seafood Restaurant, died Monday at age 76.

She was named the first Preservation Pioneer by the Historic City of Jefferson at its annual dinner last March.

Many people know of her through her conversion of the century-old Kaullen Mercantile Building into the classy O'Donoghue's Steaks & Seafood restaurant.

At an age when many people retire, she defied doubts by converting the then-vacant building in a neighborhood with concerns over crime into an upscale restaurant just blocks from the Missouri State Penitentiary.
