Mother jailed after cutting baby's throat

A 39-year-old Camden County woman is hospitalized under guard after deputies found her at the bottom of a ravine behind her home holding her 9-month-old baby, who was bleeding profusely from cuts on its throat and arms.

According to Camden County Sheriff's Capt. Kelly Luttrell, 39-year-old Bradie R. Simpson has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action and is being held on a $200,000 cash and $500,000 surety bond.

Luttrell said Simpson had allegedly cut the child's throat and arm and inflicted several wounds on herself. The child was unresponsive when the pair was found, and deputies had to use life-saving measures to resuscitate the child before it could be transported to the hospital.

The incident began late Friday evening when Simpson called the sheriff's office to report a break-in at her home on Dry Ridge Road, about four miles southwest of Camdenton. Simpson told the 911 operator someone had attempted to break into her home and she believed her neighbor had shot himself.
