Your Opinion: Initiative would leverage city's assets

I have read with interest the opinions of those on both sides of the Transformation tax issue. Clearly, taxes are always a controversial topic but their discussion becomes particularly polarizing during difficult economic times.

Having played a part in the Transformation process, I fully support this initiative but I also understand those who question the idea of increasing taxes in the face of recession. However, I would ask those voters still pondering their decision to consider whether treading water is really an option.

Whether we like it or not, our world is changing more rapidly every day. Business consultants have told us that quality of place is a vital component to attract business investment and grow the economy. They urge us to focus on our strengths as the capital city and as a center for education. We have to prepare for our future or be content to sit back and watch other communities prosper as the economy improves.

The question is simple. Do we believe that the proposed half-cent tax will fund projects that will reshape our community for future prosperity? Community leaders, business owners and citizens involved in the Transformation process unanimously believes it will. The city and county have a strong track record of delivering on the promises made during previous tax initiatives and I am confident that appropriate accountability and transparency measures are in place for this initiative.

Hundreds of our fellow citizens took part in a chamber-led effort to identify what makes our community special and how we can leverage our tremendous assets to build a brighter future for our children and ourselves. The 30 recommended projects now before us were carefully researched and evaluated on their merits and ability to reinvigorate the economic climate of our community.

We have the opportunity to truly transform our future to one where community assets are repurposed and revitalized, our heritage preserved, and the quality of life enhanced.
