Your Opinion: Initiative promotes viable reuse of St. Mary’s
Sunday, February 5, 2012
As St. Mary’s Health Center prepares to embark on the largest construction project Jefferson City has ever seen, we’re also quite mindful of the facility we’re leaving behind on the bluff overlooking downtown. Ever since we developed plans for the new St. Mary’s, we’ve pledged to work with our community to find the best way to transition our current property into a use that would continue to benefit the region.
I feel that community benefit has been captured within the Transform Jefferson City initiative. Transformation has been citizen-generated from the beginning, using careful analysis and planning to develop a proposal for the city to take advantage of its strengths and bolster its weaknesses for future economic viability.
There’s no doubt that I’m quite excited about the prospects of opening a brand new, $200 million hospital on the expanding west side of our community. But I’m also excited to imagine what can take shape within the city’s historic core through the passage of Transform Jefferson City.
