Dear Editor:
Several writers to this paper have spoken of the idea of taxation without representation. Yes, and I don't like that practice one bit. My wife and I do almost all of our trade in Jefferson City and since we are outside the city limits, we might consider this to be "taxation without representation."
But for myself, I consider this to be a tax well worth paying. So I am hoping that you residents of the city will represent us in this coming election and enact the half-cent sales tax increase in order to fund the Transformation and better the city.
For all the outcry against this tax increase, I'm not sure if some of you realize what a small amount of money this really is. One half cent on the dollar is really pretty small. If you were to purchase merchandise costing one hundred dollars, say some new clothes, this new tax would constitute 50 cents of additional sales tax. I don't think many of us would even be able to detect that "increase" in our taxes.
Someone said it best in the Wednesday paper, an average resident of Jefferson City currently pays about $500 of sales tax in a year. That is substantial. This new tax however will represent only an additional $30, in a year. That is barely eight cents per day. I think most of us can afford that to improve our city for future generations.
And yes, I say "Us" and "Our City" because that is where our heart is. Please vote yes Feb 7.
