The last word ...

Who doesn’t like to have the last word in debates, whether it’s about family topics, sports teams, political races or community issues? Well, here’s your chance.

In the past two months, we’ve published hundreds of letters for and against the Feb. 7 ballot issue called Transformation, a proposed 10-year, half-cent sales tax for economic development in Jefferson City.

The final letters to the editor about Transformation will appear in Sunday’s Views section. Given that the election will be held Tuesday, no letters to the editor about Transformation will appear in Monday’s and Tuesday’s editions of the News Tribune. But we realize proponents and opponents of the proposed sales tax may not be done talking about Transformation.

This forum is designed to give you that chance to continue the discussion. As always, we encourage you to observe our policies regarding posting comments on stories. Please stay on point and refrain from name-calling, insults and profanity.

That being said, take your stand on Transformation …

Regarding Transform Jefferson City:

: If the Transform Jefferson tax passes, Jefferson City will

become the glowing city on a hill above a thriving river port. Tourists will flock to the city, as will young professionals. Our children and grandchildren will all return to live in a growing vibrant city. If the tax is defeated, Jefferson City will forever be a stagnant small town with no vision for the future. Sounds a lot like an Obama campaign doesn't it.

I have no doubt that a lot of people spent a lot of time and effort working on committees connected with this campaign. Many projects were discussed which would be beneficial to all city residents and some are even included in the touted list of 30. My concern is that Jefferson city has always been controlled by a select group of String Pullers. Were the 400 concerned citizens assembled and led through a long process merely to provide cover for projects which will largely benefit the String Pullers but which will be paid for by everyone buying anything in Jefferson City?

I am old enough to remember when the only bridge across the river was at Bolivar Street and highways 50 and 63 ran along McCarty Street. The Highway Department recommended building a new bridge on the edge of the city with a new highway circling the main part of the city and interchanges on main streets to the city center. The String Pullers used their influence to change the plans to their vision for the city. Have the resulting tri-level interchange, stop light "Expressway" and killer curve on 54 under Jefferson Street helped or hurt Jefferson City? Will the results of Transform Jefferson City be any different?

Don't be swayed by emotions or lofty promises. Carefully consider what the results may be before you vote.

Government should only do, and by extension tax funds should only be used, for those things the public should not do or can not do. For example, police, fire protection, infrastructure, and roads.

The results of the actions by the 'string pullers' are exactly why young people leave and never come back. Easier to relocate and have more control over one's destiny.

Ambulance tax. Hotel tax. Walmart roundabout tax Kohls stoplight tax. Transformation tax. Uptown District tax. New high school tax. I-70 tax. New library tax? Special needs/Sheltered Workshop tax?

No plans for repaving crumbling streets. No plans for paying operating/maintenance costs of convention center. No plans for replacing 100 year old sewer system. No plans for replacing 100 year old water mains. No plans for building sidewalks in our neighborhoods. No plans for multipurpose civic center.

DIAGNOSIS: Dead rundown town deep in debt with very high taxes in five years

Spending city tax money on state institution (Lincoln Nursing Program) irresponsible.

Spending city tax money on remodeling of private property (St. Marys) irresponsible,

Spending city tax money on development of State-owned property (MSP) irresponsible.

Depending on NON-BINDING AGREEMENTS (not worth paper they are written on) for spending millions of city tax payers' money irresponsible.

THIS TAX PROJECT IS A MISERABLE FAILURE AT NEARLY EVERY MEASURE.
