It may not be in the same vein as those great philosophical questions like “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” or “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” but I’ve got a query:
If the National Hockey League ever gets around to settling labor strife and there are no fans left to care, is the league still relevant?
That’s the scenario we’re quickly approaching, and it’s stupid we’ve come to that point.
The longer the latest work stoppage continues for the NHL, the more apparent how removed from reality its leaders and players are.
It’s a fairly common thought hockey is a sport struggling to maintain relevance. With new sports popping up more often, and older ones enjoying fluctuations in their popularity, it’s a crowded landscape. And hockey can’t afford to be lost in the shuffle.
