For slightly more than three quarters, the Helias Crusaders ran their offense to perfection.
Then disaster struck.
The Crusaders committed six turnovers during the final 61⁄2 minutes of a winner’s bracket semifinal of the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic and dropped a 51-48 decision to St. Francis DeSales of Columbus, Ohio.
“The bottom line is, when you’re playing with a lead inside the six-minute mark, you can’t turn it over three out of four possessions,” Helias coach Josh Buffington said. “That will get you beat.”
When Brock Gerstner, who was seeing his first varsity action of the season, canned a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter, it gave the Crusaders a 40-35 lead.
