St. Joseph Benton topples Mexico

Pulling away in the fourth

It never felt like Mexico was out of its game against St. Joseph Benton Thursday afternoon. That is, until the fourth quarter.

St. Joseph Benton outscored Mexico 13-2 in the final frame to pull away for a 52-34 victory in the first round of the State Farm Holiday Hoops Invitational at Rackers Fieldhouse.

The Lady Cardinals led most of the game, including 14-8 after the first quarter and 21-18 at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 39-32 entering the fourth quarter before going cold. They went 0-of-8 from the floor and only two late free throws prevented them from going scoreless,

Mallory McAndrews and Andee Wahlert led the Lady Cardinals with 14 points each. Wahlert scored eight points in the fourth quarter. Lindsay Doolan finished with 10 points as the Lady Cardinals shot 46 percent from the field,

Brooke Costley led Mexico with 13 points, but she was just 3-of-13 shooting. Mexico committed 18 turnovers,

St. Jospeh Benton (5-1) advances to take on Helias at 5:30 p.m. today in the semifinals at Rackers Fieldhouse.

Mexico (4-4) moves to the consolation side of the bracket where it will take on Louisville Male (Ky.).
