Conceal-carry applications on rise in Cole County

Sheriff: Fears over law’s impact never borne out; more school resource officers still needed

The number of applications for conceal and carry gun permits continues to rise in Cole County.

Nearly 3,200 applications have been processed so far this year at the sheriff’s department. That’s up from around 500 in 2006 and more than 1,500 in 2009.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White is a proponent of the conceal and carry law, passed by lawmakers in 2003 after Missouri voters rejected a similar law in 1999. “All of the fears over conceal and carry have never manifested,” White said.
