Races set in 4 Jefferson City wards

Voters in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th wards will see a race for Jefferson City Council next spring, and a primary will be held in March for residents of the 1st Ward. Filing for municipal elections closed Tuesday, and 12 candidates filed for office.

In the 1st Ward, a race has formed between James J. Branch, Kolbie Ward and Chris Holsman. Because three candidates have filed for the 1st Ward seat, a primary will be held March 5. If any candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, they would win the seat without a need for a general election race.

In the 2nd Ward, incumbent Shawn Schulte will face challenger Blake Markus, a local attorney. In the 3rd Ward, Len Stella and Ken Hussey will face off for the seat currently held by Bryan Pope. Pope withdrew his name from consideration late Tuesday afternoon. In the 4th Ward, Carlos Graham filed to challenge incumbent Bill Luebbert on Tuesday afternoon.
