Our Opinion: Safe travel paramount as traffic volume rises

News Tribune editorial

Christmas preparations include travel plans for an estimated 93.3 million Americans, beginning Friday.

A vast majority of travelers - 84.4 million, or more than 90 percent - will drive at least 50 miles between Friday and New Year's Day, according to AAA.

Those numbers translate into one of every four Americans driving significant distances during the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

The record number of higher travelers is attributed to lower gasoline prices, coupled with the difficulty of finding convenient flights at reasonable prices.

Increased traffic typically is accompanied by an increased number of traffic accidents.

In Missouri last year, 851 traffic crashes were recorded during the holiday counting period, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol. Those accidents resulted in five deaths and 317 injuries.

Or, in the words of Col. Ron Replogle, patrol superintendent: "Last year, a Missouri family was affected by a traffic crash every 14.5 minutes."

In anticipation of higher in traffic volumes, motorists are encouraged to devote greater attention travel plans.

Recommendations include:

• Check weather forecasts and/or the patrol's Road Condition Report by calling 800-222-6400. Make sure your vehicle is winterized and equipped with blankets, flashlights and provisions needed for winter emergencies.

• Be prepared for delays caused by weather conditions or accidents. Allow extra time to reach your destination.

• Carry the patrol's emergency number, 800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone. The number can be used to report a accident, a stranded motorist, traffic violation or other emergency.

Replogle adds: "Please be a safe, courteous driver. Wear your seat belt, obey Missouri's traffic laws, and if you include alcohol in your celebrations, please don't drive."

For many Missourians, safe travel will usher in a merry Christmas and will kick off a prosperous new year.
