Mo. mother of suspect in robbery attempt turns son in
Wednesday, December 12, 2012
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A Kansas City woman who spotted her 16-year-old son on surveillance video of an attempted restaurant holdup is getting praise and criticism for hauling him before police.
The teen is one of three people suspected of trying to hold up a Church's Chicken on Sunday night. They fled when a manager wrestled a gun away.
The mother saw surveillance tape on a TV news report and took her son to a police station Monday night, securing him in her car by hitting the child safety locks.
KMBC-TV reports ( http://bit.ly/ZcZNe6 ) the restaurant manager is grateful to the woman, who stopped with her son at the restaurant on the way to the police station. But police say she's also getting grief from some people for her decision to turn him in.

I couldn't turn my son in unless he killed somebody but a unsuccessful robbery. No way possible because his life is over especially if this is a black kid. Life as he knows it is over and all because his mother turned him in. No college, no job and he will more than likely either live in a prison or with his mother forever. NO WAY I COULD TURN MY KIDS IN TO THROW AWAY THIER LIFE! I would of had to discipline him at home but no way i turn him into the police that lady will be lucky to see her son for the next 5 years.

So you draw the line at murder? What if the robbery had been successful? Would you have turned your son in then? What if the clerk had been shot? Would you have turned your son in then? Would you let your son run wild until they murdered someone and THEN turn them in?
Maybe you did not see the TV news report from Kansas City. The mother who turned her son in stated the 15 year old boy was out of control and had not been living at home because he felt she was being to strict on him. She also said she had to trick her son into getting in the car. So how do you propose she discipline him if he has run away from home? Even though he is not living at home she can still be held liable for his actions. The child is 15 and unless he has a prior history, he can be handled by the juvenile authorities. A little time in juvenile detention will do him some good. If he has priors, then it is time he learned his lesson.

Would you turn your son in if you knew he had raped a woman or a child?

The kid is a waste already. How many successful people were robbing when they were younger? Lock him up or let him go- doesn't matter his life is toast. His parents should have been more concerned when he was younger and they should have raised him with respect and morals.
It's too bad, but he will soon be another forgotten statistic like all the others.

Many very successful people have turned their lives around after doing some unfortunate things as a teenager - even robbery. This boy's life doesn't have to be over but he will need guidance and a steady hand to put him on a better path.

I'm a very liberal person on a lot of things, but when it comes to raising kids I think the "old fashioned" way is best. Children NEED dicipline, they NEED boundaries. They don't need parents that make excuses for everything. This mother stood up for what is right, even though I'm sure it hurt her. That's a value more kids should see.

This is coming from all the people that were outraged about lil Miss Bustamante getting sentenced but because its a black kid now that life is wasted and blah blah blah. If he is a run away and thepolice did not know about it then the mother should be charged with child endangerment for not reporting him as a runaway. I can only read the lil bit that is online. You cannot compare an unsuccessful robbery to murder or rape or anything all of your what ifs are irrelevant because as you know the saying goes if ifs were a fifth we'd all be drunk. Deal with reality andd not what ifs your life would be a lot better off.

The reality is the punk kid robbed a business with his buddies and his mother LOVES HER SON ENOUGH to attempt to change his life.
It appears you could learn from that mother.

How do you know the kid is black? How does race matter in this case?
I think any differences here are that everyone perceived Allysa had little to no parenting. This kid has a mom who would do even illegal things to try to protect him. The expectations are a little higher on this kid's mom that they were on Alyssas. She should have done better.

The mother is to blame that she has let her son get out of control in the first place. However, she should be commended for turning him in, knowing he needs help she cannot give him. This week is a failed robbery attempt, next week he could be successful, then the next week maybe someone gets shot. She did the right thing. His life is not wasted over a fail robbery attempt, the sentence will be very light if any. Most likely suspended and put on probation, so don't be over dramatic.

How will he be changed if he isn't punished?
How will be be changed if he doesn't receive good parenting?
How can you say his life isn't a waste? I mean- anyone can turn themselves around if they want to, but there is no reason to think that it will happen here. The kid got off. He will try again.
If Mom taught him anything, it is that lieing makes everything better.

Sometimes no matter how good the parents are a kid can get in with the wrong crowd and do crazy stuff. More like illegal stuff. I don't know what kind of home life he has but hopefully this kid will do a turn around and see the light. Protecting kids from the law and what may happen to them teaches them nothing except they can get away with doing whatever they want . What do they care if they get grounded or get an azz whipping. Big deal. What it says is that dad and or mom aren't going to do a blasted thing because they don't want little Susie or Danny to spend time behind bars but the time will come when they don't have that protection due to getting nailed by the cops. And where does the fault lay? Better to spend three days in the pokie due to a parent turning them in than 20 years in prison for bad parenting.

Let me add that the 3 days would be a wakeup call to get his life on track. If not then who knows what will happen.
