MSP tour numbers exceed expectations

The old Missouri State Penitentiary has attracted more visitors than predicted in 2012 with more than 19,000 people exploring the site in the past season.

According to a release from the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), tours in 2012 attracted 19,121 visitors, nearly 2,000 more visitors than 2011. The prison also saw its cumulative attendance pass the 50,000 mark.

Tour attendance has increased each year since the CVB began doing tours in 2009. In 2011, about 17,000 visitors came through the prison.
