Benton County man arrested in child’s death

COLE CAMP, Mo. (AP) — A 27-year-old Benton County man has been charged with killing his live-in girlfriend’s toddler daughter.

Charges of second-degree murder and child abuse were filed Wednesday against Rafael Alejo of Cole Camp. He is jailed in Benton County. No attorney was listed for him in online court records.

The probable cause statement says the mother of 2-year-old Mia Aguilar took the girl to a Sedalia hospital early Sunday. After receiving CPR, Mia was transferred to a Kansas City hospital. But KYTV reports she died on Tuesday morning.

Mia’s brother told authorities that Alejo hit his sister in the stomach and also hits his mother. An autopsy found that Mia had suffered physical abuse.

Court records say Alejo is believed to be an illegal immigrant and went by several other names.
