"Last to Die" (Ballantine), by Tess Gerritsen

Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles deal with a killer with a diabolical plan in "Last to Die," Tess Gerritsen's latest Rizzoli & Isles thriller.
Barely a teenager, Teddy Clock hides under the bed as the killer walks through his house and murders his family. Rizzoli investigates the case, but Teddy is in too much shock to provide any answers.
She learns that Teddy was adopted after he witnessed the massacre of his parents two years earlier. With Isles' help, Rizzoli has Teddy enrolled in an exclusive boarding school in the Maine wilderness. She hopes the school will provide protection for Teddy until she can identify the murderer.
While visiting a friend at the school, Isles learns that the parents of two other students were murdered. She contacts Rizzoli, her friend and colleague, with the information. The killer is watching, and the school's remote location is perfect for him to finish the job.
Gerritsen has a knack for creating great characters and mysterious plots that seem straightforward but also dazzle with complexity and twists. The differences between the books in the series and the TNT television series "Rizzoli & Isles" are minor, so newcomers to Gerritsen's novels will be able to easily jump into the proceedings.
