Why is the JCCVB hosting a pep rally for the Securities & Exchange Commission?

Someone had to do it...you know? The Securities and Exchange Commission has got criticised a lot recently for failing to stop the banking/insurance/housing meltdown and all the mortgage and securities fraud that caused it. We need Americans to feel good about their regulatory authorities, even when they fail miserably at their assigned responsibilities.

Sarcasm?

Let me state first off that I'm a HUGE supporter of the downtown events. However,I find it interesting that we're hosting a pep rally for MU and quaint that any of the organizers actually think some of the Georgia guests will leave Columbia to attend. I know the Missouri Theater is hosting something specifically for University of Georgia on the evening of the 7th. I hope the event turns out, but it seems like poor planning on JC's end.

Perhaps a city council person is looking to go on vacation to Georgia and is looking for a town there to become a friendly neighbor with so they can go visit for free.

From what I have heard, the hotels here are quite booked up with overflow from the MU game. Perhaps the CVB is looking to get those guests interested in partying here, rather than going to Columbia the evening prior to the game.

That's exactly right and motivation to annex a couple of hotels outside of city limits.

That's good to hear about the overflow. I always assume the worst when it a politician opens there mouth.

You mean Lincoln University isn't joining the SEC?

Not sure I understand why Jefferson City is celebrating something for a school in another city, but yet they don't do much to celebrate the University in their own home town. Does this make any sense?

Why would anyone attending a game at MU want to participate in activities here, rather than participating in the REAL activities in Columbia?

I mean, I guess it is OK, and I don't really care, but it seems very odd to me. We should be supporting our own University here- make it a community event, not just something that "LU people" do.

Agreed I think MU is really doing all they can to market the new league and, as noted above, they expect quite a few SEC fans here. I also agree that LU needs more local promotion, Home opener pep rallies for each sport, homecoming festivities promoted to citizens as well as students, etc. Look at the market though. MU, even with just SEC and MU overflow, can generate more cash downtown for a single game than LU can for several. A winning season in their conference would go a long way, but the cost to compete may not be available or justifiable. Maybe the new admin will realize that community involvement is a benefit worth weighing when considering the cost of upping the quality of their sports programs.

I agree with ASB. The community needs to support Lincoln much more than it does. Lincoln needs to continue involving itself in the community more as well. There is great untapped synergy for both if we can learn to access it.

Hard to be inclusive as a "black" university when surrounded by races other than black. LU's antiquated design perpetuates the lack of a symbiotic relationship it deserves to have with it's capitol city. I'm not suggesting erasing history (that would be bad **see lowering confederate flags at confederate historic sites), just modifying the mission to reflect 21st century realities.

LU is no longer a black university. That was indeed its history since, you may remember, blacks were not encouraged to attend white universities so the post-Civil War black land grant universities were born. LU has transitioned to a modern system, but does still draw from the black community nationally due to its past traditions. Resentment of LU's origins and traditions is still one of the biggest barriers to its needed role in JC's culture. And didn't you mean "other races including black"?

Lincoln's origins, founders, and traditions need to be honored and recognized. However, the school needs to think of ways that more locals and persons of other race than "black" can participate.

Perhaps some educating the public about the traditions- how they came to be, what are the significances, how do they apply to today, etc. would be helpful.

The university and the local community need to work together to recognize all students at Lincoln- not just the "black" students.

I thinkl openness and inclusion on the part of everyone is needed. When there is exclusion, than folks naturally assume the worst of others.

Again, all this needs to be done in the spirit of recognizing differences, and for mutually benefitting everyone involved. I can see lots of benefits to lots of folks, if they could just open up and be involved.

Last I heard, Lincoln University's student population was primarily 80% white commuter students. But that was from several years ago. Not sure of the percentages now.
